Last update was 2021, and mostly pertaining to the restrictions of covid and its effects on getting VEC.

USA citizen here, I am visiting Vietnam in September and want to get a VEC 5 year, since my mother is Vietnamese.

I want to know if anyone has experience getting VEC in the past year, in person, in Vietnam?

I want to know if I can just walk into the office in HCMC with my Mom, bringing my birth certificate and passport in order to get it? She speaks fluent vietnamese.

EDIT: Mainly asking because i see a huge spectrum of requirements on this, from the very strict govt website guidance (apostilled cert with copy and mom's apostilled copy as well), to very lenient "I just walked in and only had a copy of a family members birth certificate and they gave me vec" to even more lenient "they saw my name was vietnamese and gave me VEC" , i guess bottom line is it depends on the day and who you know? - @ta1010

Get it in the USA at the San Francisco Consulate General of Vietnam. Then you can use it to enter Vietnam.

Your mother doesn't need to be there. You don't even need to be there (it can be done by mail).

Remember, a "5 Year" Visa Exemption Certificate is only good for 6 months "permission to remain" before you need to exit Vietnam and re-enter.

If you do decide to get the VEC issued in Vietnam, it can only be activated when you enter Vietnam.

So you'll still need to exit the country before you can activate it.

DON'T MAKE THE COMMON MISTAKE of overstaying your tourist visa after you receive you VEC in Vietnam.

You absolutely must exit the country in order to activate it upon re-entry

Sounds good, great info, thanks. Only thing is im currently abroad now and will only have one week in USA before heading off to Vietnam. I was hoping doing it in person in Vietnam would be a cheaper and easier process
