Coffee peculator
Hi all,
I'm living in Saigon but I want to buy a coffee perculator so I can make my own good - and strong - coffee. Do you know where I can buy one? They look like this
And what about ground coffee and coffee beans where can I find some of them? for a reasonable price.
Coffee bean sells them for like 300000 thats not bad but it is three times what I would pay back home I would expect 7 USD
What do you think
Kind regards,
From a somewhat uncaffeinated person
This is a strange question considering you in the homeland of the drip coffee world.
All you need is an electric kettle (Sunhouse-#10), coffee drip ($1), teaspoon, can of condensed, sweetened milk, and a glass tumbler. All from Co-op Mart.
Ground coffee can be had there, too, as well as along Ham Nghi and all areas of TP HCM.
Forget your percolator - wrong technology for here.
Good coffee costs money - there is a direct link. cheap coffee tastes cheap.
But you can buy what you want, and genuine Italian coffee machines that steam like crazy from a couple of places in Quan 3.
I'd say 300000 sounds very good. I've just paid 800000 for my french press.
@musica Hi, I meant 300,000 just for a bag of coffee. French presses are ok but again I'm looking for something very strong.
@Jaitch Hi, yeah this local stuff doesn't cut it. I can go to the end of the alley and get one of those for 10,000 dong. I do like how its authentically Vietnamese though.
You say I can find a peculator though, could I bother you for a few more hints about the location
Thanks for the replies
Much appreciated,
A self confessed caffeine addict
There must be somewhere you can buy a cafetiere? That's what your looking for right? You got me thinking maybe I should bring one with me. Like you I sometimes like to make my own coffee.

They have evry type of coffee machine imaginable, along with accessories, spares and service.

My friend, I have to say 300,000vnd for a bag of coffee is such a rip-off!! Last weekend, I bought 1kg of ground coffee and it cost 160,000vnd. Where are u staying?? Because if you are staying too far, it will be pointless to give you the direction to the shop!!
Unei_Nguyen oi,
It depends on the brand and type of coffee. I usually get my whole coffee beans at the Cafe Trung Nguyen on Nguyen Trai St. (North side) near by Le Hong Phone St. in District 5. The best one in town is called " Cafe Chong" which costs around 800,000 VND per KG. But it would be wasteful to use Chong Coffee in a Cafetiere because Chong Coffee seems to work best using the cheap slowly-filtered-dripped aluminum ware that costs only 20,000 VND per set. it's good for one cup at a time, but you can always buy a few of those to serve company at home.
Hi ! J.Keats !I have been searched in the Internet and found this look like the coffee peculator you want to buy.Following this website to view it ()
Have you bought it yet !? If you did not buy , you can come following the address in the website to reach it !
have a nice day !

Docwood ơi!!
I believe what u mean is "Cafe Chon"!! "Chon" (which means "weasel") is a kind of animal who eat coffee beans and, therefore, have coffee beans in their poo. People realize that the very special coffee in that poo is extremely delicious, so they collect it and make it into "Cafe Chon".(arg!!) This kind of coffee is high-class, rare and expensive, so people usually buy it from prestigious Coffee brand (like Trung Nguyen coffee) only. But for other normal kinds of coffee, 300k/box is somehow expensive!!
Btw, The Coffee Beans is not native here; I mean it is a brand from somewhere else like the USA or something, so the price is unnecessarily high.
I have one that I rarely use, but this is a really good way to brew a cup of coffee. This is an Italian's produce, I guess.
I would bring it with me to Saigon this summer. Want to have a cup of coffee with me??? any one?
Thanks for your replies everyone.
I finally found a place, could be the same one that is referenced to earlier in the thread.Â
Bachhop Total Coffee Solutions

They are well stocked in coffee machines of all varieties. I picked up a cheap perculator from this place, and have been very pleased with my purchase.
Havn't tried the weasel, yet but am still searching for a good not pricey bean. There's heaps around, binh tanh market does weasel beans for 80000 per 100 grams. I saw some other beans for 30000 per hundred gram the other day. But all i've tried are either vanillery or quite sweet. Which isn't very nice.
I plan to drink my way through HCMC stock of coffee beans till I find the perfect match.
Arabica 14000 for 100 gm. Cong Quynh beside the gold shop near the junction with Bui Vien. Turn right at the end of Bui Vien about 150 metres along on the left.
Why don't you call:

docwood is right, even Cafe Trung Nguyen brand offers very large choices of cafe types, for beginner to more demanding cafe drinkers, and prices depend on the strength and quality in deed.

I thought Unei was joking, when she said "Weasel Like". She is absolutely right. I just found shocking news to support this. The coffee beans out of the elephant dung in Norther Thailand cost around $1,100 USD per Kilogram.
One better off sticks with Robusta coffee at Trung Nguyen in HCMC.

Civet poo coffee is so ±è²¹²õ²õé±ð, the latest expensive 'shit' coffee is from elephants! Around $20-30 a cup in DakLak and $40-50 in TP HCM.
The process is similar. Feed the elephants (of which DakLak has many, naturally) with coffee beans removed from their shells (of which DakLak has much) and next day gather the crop.
It's a win-win deal for the Ede tribe, who own most of the elephants, as the elephant herder/driver makes money and he employs his wife, or a helper, to follow the elephant on foot to rescue any excrement from which the 'processed' beans are recovered!
Hey there
Is it the same with what you are looking for?
About coffee bean, you should go to "Trung Nguyen" coffee shop or Highland coffee shop. They have many types and their price is cheaper than Cofffee bean
Hello you can buy it from Huongmaicafe store in Hanoi. they sell all filter same like you post picture and coffee bean and powder even Weasel coffee (Caphe Chon). But that percolator you post is kind of cheap it not secure when you use, you should choose kind of quality from famous brand as TIAMO or BRAVA.
If you find yourself coming to this thread, like I did, then you probably have not found the coffee or brewing method you're looking for in Saigon. I would recommend going to the store attached to (just right of the cafe) at Passio coffee, 15F Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai. This store has normal working hours, 8-5, Monday thru Saturday.
They carry all types of Japanese drip coffee cones, filters, kettles, and other brewing methods. It's great and I found exactly what I was looking for.
The store manager, Huan, also sells his own beans from his farm in Äà Lạt. His beans are the best I have found in Saigon and reasonably priced (compared to beans in the US). He has several different varieties of beans that he roasts himself. These are beans for those of us that like to taste and smell awesome coffee and catch a very nice head buzz.
