Recommendations for areas to live for retirees

kelley21063

Hi All,

My wife and I are selling out and moving to Belize. I've read that there is a large expat community down there. I'd like to ask for some recommendations for areas to live. Both of us are retired and are looking for a laid back community. We love to hear from you with your recommendations... Thanks!

Hi,

It really is about what you like, what you can afford, what geography you prefer, along with your needs and limitations.

Belize is not a large and you can get to any of the districts as part of a day trip with relative ease depending on your transportation(air, land, water).

I'd suggest visiting first if you can.

There are expats all over, but you can find lots of them near the beaches(coastal and cayes/islands), on the mainland in the northern area of the country closer to Mexico, in the center near the capital(Belmopan), in the west, and in the south, as well as near the mountains.

Belize is a diverse country. A small melting pot of sorts.

Some areas offer more infrastructure than others(utility access, paved roads, public transportation, larger medical facilities, shopping, etc). While some offer more self sustainable off grid living.

From what I've heard/read you need to be in the country and experience it for an extended period of time. You can find groups on social media for different areas specific to expats.

I know that was a long non-answer, but the answer really depends on you.

It depends on the lifestyle you are looking for.

We have a place on the hummingbird highway in stann creek district. Low crime. Centrally located for exploration. We rent one of our houses out. Most people that rent from us are moving to belize or researching where they might want to settle. For more information feel free to contact me at mikronmachineltd@gmail.com we would like to help anyway we can. For pictures and availability just email me.

I lived in San Pedro for 10 years and 10 in Cayo.  Both are nice.  Selling our place in Cayo now:  [link moderated]/

No international license needed. Your foreign license will be fine. Rental cars are easy as well. I have a studio for rent in Cayo if you decide to come out this way.  Feel free to message me.  Personally think Cayo is better than OW/Corozal areas. The exception being that in Corozal you are close to Chetumal Mexico which is great.

Cayo too rugged? What gives you that impression? It’s probably the most 1st world part of the country. Have you been to Spanish lookout? It’s like pulling into the US Midwest.

At your age I would not recommend driving in Belize, especially as a new arrival. Catch the bus, or better yet, charter a taxi to take you to Corozal and look around. The area is beautiful and developing nicely and you get the best of two worlds - Belize and Mexico. Message me if you wish. I have property for rent and can recommend other options for you.

Thank you for your answer. I have a lot to take care of before I can make the move. I have a motor home I want to sell I do not want to drive it there. How the dog, and I have to pack some stuff or you can get rid of some. Also I've got to make sure I can continue to get my social security, which I believe I can.

BelizeExpert

@Marilyn Graham

You can hire someone to drive down your motor home. And then live in that a while as you look around Belize.

Who are you talking to here?

Marilyn Graham

@BelizeExpert

Are you going to give me the money for that?

@Marilyn Graham

Please post what you find out about SS.

THANKS.

Yes you will continue to receive your social security. That is not dependent on where you live.

That’s wonderful to hear about your plans to move to Belize! Based on what you’re looking for,  a laid-back community with a strong expat presence; are three areas that might be a great fit:

San Ignacio (Cayo District): San Ignacio offers a vibrant mix of culture and nature. The town is known for its friendly locals, rich Mayan history, and a variety of outdoor activities like hiking, river tubing, and exploring ancient ruins. º£½ÇÂÒÂ×s appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and the strong sense of community here. The cost of living is relatively affordable, with one-bedroom apartments typically around $500 USD per month

º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Exchange

.

Hopkins Village (Stann Creek District): If you’re dreaming of a coastal lifestyle, Hopkins might be the place for you. This small Garifuna fishing village is renowned for its warm, welcoming community and tranquil beach setting. It’s a haven for those seeking a slower pace of life, with opportunities for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and enjoying the local culture. º£½ÇÂÒÂ×s often highlight the friendly locals and the laid-back lifestyle as major draws

º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Exchange

.

Corozal Town: Located near the Mexican border, Corozal offers a unique blend of Belizean and Mexican influences. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Belize for expats, particularly retirees, due to its low cost of living and proximity to the U.S. and Mexico

International Living

. The expat community here is well-established, and many choose to live in nearby Consejo Shores, Progresso, Cerros, or even Sarteneja ;  known for its beautiful homes and peaceful surroundings.

Each of these areas has its own charm and community vibe. It might be helpful to visit each one to see which resonates most with you and your wife. ***
