Managing mailboxes or PO boxes in Belize

Hello everyone,

Something as simple as receiving mail can become a whole new experience when you settle in Belize as an expat. Mailing management can indeed be different from what you are used to. In order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats, we invite you to share your insights.

How do you receive mail in Belize? Do you have a traditional mailbox, a PO Box, or another system?

In my experience, the "postal system" in Belize does not share much in common with what one might expect in the U. S.  There are no house to house mail deliveries. If one were to actually receive a letter or a package, in my experience someone from the local post office would ride the motorcycle up to your home and leave a notice that there was mail to pick up - at the post office. When one gets to the post office, the incoming parcel is opened and examined to see what duty can be charged for it. I suspect the "duty" is made up on the spot, and sometimes part of it may actually make its way to the government coffers. Outgoing mail works fairly well, though, as long as one brings such mail to the post office to be sent out.
