Hello Friends,

My son is a Medicine Student in Medical University, Plovdiv. He will be starting his Year 3 now (enrolled in 2023). He is a UK citizen. Once he got admitted to MU Plovdiv in 2023 he was issued a Visa D for Bulgaria and subsequently he was issued a Bulgarian Resident Permit. There was a delay from his side in renewing his residence permit and he was told聽 when he went to renew his resident permit that as it has expired he will have to go back to UK and apply for another Visa D (Student). He applied for this visa D on Aug 7, 2025 in Bulgarian consulate in Edinburgh.

It has been more than 50 days now still there is no update on his visa. We have followed many times with the consulate but they say they are yet to get an update from Bulgaria. He is missing his classes for 2 weeks now and this delay may derail his attendance.

Can you please advise what we can do in this situation.

(a) Talk to the consulate to clarify the reason for the delay (i.e. what update do they need), (b) talk to the university and their immigration/student visa advisors, (c) talk to a good immigration attorney to review your situation and potential options, (d) talk/write to the MFA (email and emergency hotline on their contacts page) to see if they can help you, (e) take a gap year, plan on restarting next September, with plenty of time to sort out D visa/residence.
