How can a Non-European find a job in Sweden ?

Moonflower88

Greetings!

This place is just the sort of community I’ve been looking for. My name is Cherly Andersen, a Cybersecurity Analyst in the Computer Science field here in Arizona. I’m a Puerto Rican Latina living in the United States with my husband and two dogs.Ā  We own property here and had long term plans, but things have soured over time since 2016–you can probably guess why. Especially for me who is part of like 6 different groups of Americans MAGA despises (Latinos, LGBTQ+, Neurodivergent, Atheists, Environmentalists, Leftist Women).

It’s because of the latter, and because of how downright difficult it has become for me to feel safe here, that we decided to make a move. I’ve been researching countries across Europe who are free thinking and where their government’s policies better align with our views on what it is to be a community of people working together for the common good.

I understand seeking asylum may be an option for me, but I wouldn’t know how to prove I need it. I never thought we’d be in this situation. I’ve been advocating for our rights and standing up against Trump for a decade, and this is the first time I’ve felt truly afraid of my own government and the authorities who were meant to protect me and my loved ones.

Hence, I am looking for a job in Sweden so I may sell our property and our vehicles here and make the journey across the pond. We plan on buying a home there with the funds and just start anew in a country that needs and will appreciate our labor. As a Computer Scientist since my time in the military, I have close to ten years of experience in the field. Largely focused on Security and Identity Access Management. I have a Bachelor’s Degree and I’m working on my Master’s and certifications at the moment. I hadn’t the need for Certs before because I was fortunate to start my career right after college. I worked as a contractor and later was hired on by a large banking institution, where I worked for 7 years.

I have applied for various position over the past few weeks but it is difficult for me to find companies willing and able to interview and accept non-EU candidates.

Any assistance and input offered to me would be appreciated. Tack! šŸ™

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Not easy; to get a decent job anywhere, you really need 4 things:

  1. Relevant experience.
  2. Relevant/valid qualification.
  3. Speak the local language.
  4. Luck.

You need to find a job, so how?Ā  Try joining LinkedIn and reaching out to your peers already in Sweden to find out who is hiring, where and how much they are paying, you'll then know if this is even a starter and who to send your CV to.

You also need to consider whether Sweden is really the place to escape to, currently, the Trump equivalents in Sweden (and in many other EU countries) are on the rise, so I would really consider how wise a move this would be.Ā  You mention Asylum, while it's possible, Sweden appears to be actively discouraging this in favour of what you are trying to do (finding a job and somewhere to live without expecting the Government to pick up the tab); whatever, they have a website with the details of how, this will take you straight to it.

I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you so much for the details! Yeah, unfortunately this poison is spreading through disinformation. Russia’s at the center of it. It doesn’t matter what NATO country you go to, the tentacles are everywhere. But seeing what’s happening to the U.S. may help people discern where the threat lies and act to prevent it and educate their citizens on it.

I did join LinkedIn a while back, your suggestion has given me an idea. Thank you!

Not a problem, perhaps consider Canada as an option?

Moonflower88

Canada has the same problems America does when it comes to corporations exploiting workers and billionaires influencing policies. I’m trying to get away from that.

You'll get that wherever the marketplace creates the right conditions to attract these people; perhaps get a cabin up in the mountains, then all you have to worry about are the bears.

@Cynic

I understand that is the case, greed exists everywhere. But it also permeates society in varying degrees. I’ve experienced what happens when it overtakes that country’s entire political and economic modus operandi.

America has always been driven by greed and what it can get for cheap or for nothing at all. Our culture and our entire economic system is built around the freedom to take whatever valuables people have (including time, intellect, and talent), and paying them near nothing in return—if anything at all.

I believe people who work hard deserve to be treated with dignity, not as though they should be grateful for every coin their masters give for their labor. And I believe that countries should be communities, everyone working together to care for one another, for even the weakest and the sickest among them, instead of each having to compete in everything just to put food on the table. Competition is well and good, a bit of greed is okay too, but not when you put those things above your fellow citizens.

Wherever I end up moving, I want it to be somewhere where I can live those ideals and contribute to sustaining them for others. And if I see echoes from what I lived here occur there, I’ll know to speak up against them.

Maybe Malta? But you would have to direct your question in that forum.

@SimCityAT

What I’ve done today is sign up in a recruiting agency! And they’ll be going through my CV with meĀ  šŸ¤”. Shall see where it goes! For the moment, I’m learning Swedish, resisting the regime, hating everything they do to us and our allies, and trying not to lose my sanity in the process.

I wish you good luck, it's certainly is scary times across the world as Cynic pointed out. I quite understand you concern when you think we have 4 years of Trump and he has only been in power a couple of months.
