Speaking English in Papua New Guinea

Priscilla

Hi everyone,

It is widely agreed that speaking English is essential for a successful integration in Papua New Guinea. Do you agree? Share your experience!

Do you speak English? If so, where did you learn this language? Where can one attend a language course in Papua New Guinea?

If not, how do you cope with daily activities? Is it easy to communicate in a different language with Papua New Guineans?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Hi Priscilla,

I am English by birth, so it is my first language. It is a very useful language in PNG because it is widely spoken in business and in social settings such as the Yacht Club, Golf Club, Vision City and in restaurants. I would like to speak some Tok Pisin, but don't really have time to learn.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Priscilla,

In Papua New Guinea, both English and Tok Pisin are widely used. Other local dialects like Motu is also being used but mostly by nationals who grew up with the language. In my experience, Tok Pisin is easier to learn because of its similarity with English. Motu, on the other hand, is a bit difficult. The reason being is that it's hard to find a reference to that language.

I learned Tok Pisin through reading Wantok newspaper and from reading King James Bible written in Tok Posin (Pidgin). I'm not good at it but I guess I can convey the message well because the locals can understand me when I'm speaking in Tok Pisin.

As for where I learned English, its part of the curriculum in the Philippines. So we have English subjects from elementary up to college.
