Warning to (primarily) ex-pat Women
you know, there is a group on Facebook called "You know you're Libyan American when..." you should really check it out. It'll help you prepare for other Libyan fails you may encounter.
here are few good ones:
You know you're Libyan American when...
-your social existence consists of gurma (gossip) over shahee (tea)
-your family is going through depression when they're low on tun and hareesa
-your mother can hurl a farther than Troy Aikman can throw a footballÂ
-you have to listen to your parents constant swearing about how libya is a much better and smarter country than US..but back in the day not today
-you are the only person in libya that even knows wtf a postal and sewage system is
-you realize that there is more than just the one sport called 'koora' in the world and you play the others with regularity
-you're mom is convinced America is the reason you're a 'bad child'
-You think that its unhygienic and sick to use the same damn plate for EVERYONE at mealtimes
-you're actually friends with a girl, its not a pathetic attempt to make her our gf
-Your mom gives you a 'Got Beer?' shirt to wear to a Eid party..not knowing the haram implications of what she has done
-If Wal Mart is having a sale, they are there buying everything..and they are angry when we complain about the cheap quality
-you act all like you love libya in the US, but the minute you enter libya its like 'yea so im American'
-That summer you spent in Libya--you never slept because each weekend one of your neighbors was having a wedding party ten feet from your window.
-You consider your cousins off-limits for anything more than friendship
-you dont understand the fascination that seems to emanate from every libyan regarding ..we see it for what it really is for--hard dough that has no taste surrounded in sauce
-you're mom is convinced America is the reason you're a 'bad child'
LOL this applies to most immigrant groups I was a bad child cause of growing up in SA!
Oright....I am an expat in Libya but I was born here to, so the thing about mugging is true....there is no denying to that. But a message I'd like pass on is that no matter where you go in Libya always make sure you are with someone not alone especially women and never carry large bags or purses while walking anywhere avoid this risk. Also be aware of the people around you beause you never know what can happen within a matter of seconds a car can pass by at 100km/h on the gargaresh road and snatch away everything you got.
Apart from that from my experience (23yrs) born and raised here it's all good and live freely to be honest there's nothing to be worried about. Be happy to answer anyone who has Q's in their mind
4 handbags snatched from cars on Gargaresh in the last 2 days.
You must be the only libyan who read that list and took it seriously.
In the spirit of keeping this board nice, friendly and helpful... Aherm... Sarah, I believe you'll find that Mo was being sarcastic...

Unlike western countries people notice that and reactions range from annoyance to arousal. I'll tell you this, our crime rate as far as percentages are concerned is ridiculously low compared to the rest of the world. This whole knife thieving thing is quite a modern phenomenon that occurred in the last 20 years. The very fact that people are more overtly religious and more attached to families than in western countries contributes to the safety. You must be a cock or have been walking around in the wrong places to get into any sort of trouble.
You must be a deep sea fisherman with those highlighted in bold. By the way, you can come down to where I live any time you want (near the British Consul ) and I will show you where MY FRIEND was mugged , I can guarantee that you would apologise to me for calling her a 'cock' within about 30 seconds of seeing the area.
Clansy...what a pleasure to see you back

In America you laugh at jokes
In Libyan Jamahiriya jokes laugh at YOU!!

Good to be back mate, just checking to see if the forum went into meltdown or not in my absence. We will have to meet up for a coffee soon.
I don't care what you wear. I walk down our street all covered up except my head and they still say things and look and hollar things. I am uncomfortable and I hate going outside on the street. It's 30 years or more behind times here.
They think if you wear a sundress, you're a whore. They are hipocrits. Whores are professionals who take money. If you have to buy a wife with gold, is she a whore too?

As a matter of interest where do you stay Sea Angel ?. I must admit that this was my major concern prior to my wife coming out here. It doesn't happen when I am with her, just the occasional stare, which I reacted to initially but now just ignore, but in our area down town, we are pretty well known, so she is left alone, it is when she takes a taxi further afield that comments are made.
Try not to let it get you down, they are just showing their ignorance and it is no fault of your own.
I know. Thanks. I hate feeling this way. Live in Janzour. It's not so bad on the street anymore because the regulars know me. It's the ones yelling out of buses, etc.
They do not do it at all when our Libyan driver is with me.
It reminds me of 30/40 years ago when the Mexicans were new to Texas and they did the same. But that was not a whole city/culture of them.

I must admit to sometimes wanting to know what they are shouting just out of curiosity, and other times I think it could result in bloodshed and not mine either . The trouble is if you mess with a Libyan YOU are always in the wrong in the eyes of the law, so better either not to react, or don't get caught
.
Keep smiling sea Angel.

Don't listen to Clansman. He is a special case. All Scots have this Jedi force about them that would frighten even the trashiest Libyan and transform him into a well-behaved gentleman.
I really have nothing to say except you're right. Just enjoy the ride. It comes in stages. You sure will have very, very unusual stories to tell when you go home. I had issues with store clerks and cabbies. At one point I just accepted the fact that they're lesser humans than I. A little evil is never a bad thing. Ask Stewie Griffin.
As for Mexicans....They are reproducing so fast that La Raza will have lawn-mowing replace baseball as the national sport by 2025. So I don't say anything bad about them in public. VIVA LA RAZA!!!
Edit:
P.S. you may want to blog or otherwise record/share you experience week by week in one way or another. We all need to deload as we go.

Care to rephrase ?

Not me! I do it all the time and get away with it, and victorious too
I even neglected to pay a cabbie once, humiliated him beyond his wildest dreams, then chased him away. Muahahahahaha!!
It's plain awesomeness having dual citizenship.

And both countries are proud of you, to be sure.

Fo sho. But shouldn't it be the other way around?

Sorry. You're right. Not "whole" Is "most" better?

Get fonzie or clansy to come to Abusalim streets, they sure can sort all his "JEDI" powers!
Mudman wrote:You spelled 'hole' wrongly.
How else is 'Whole' spelt smartypants? It seems to me that your the one who's got it incorrect....what you thinking of you naughty fella!
Mudman wrote:No.
I spelled it correctly. It's a noun, right ?
an adjective in this example

That will be where some of the druggies hang out then. If you think that is bad you clearly have never been to any city centre in Scotland around 0400 on a Saturday morning. I spent 9 years working as security on the doors of pubs and clubs in Scotland, you tend to get a bit 'street smart' when you constantly have to be on the lookout for knives and people who want to stick a bottle in your face, so I will give that street a miss (especially after dark) if that is al right with you ?

That's a pretty bold statement for someone who's not been here too long. Sure, there are a lot of tools out there who like to make a nuisnace of themselves... but lets not rush to indict the entire populace because of the street scumbags you've come across.

Don't get me wrong, we have our idiots too in the States. Being a nice and honest person, I am just having a hard time with what goes on here, and it's not all about what goes on in the streets to women. I think you know how it is here.
I was having a bad day yesterday. But now I am feeling better and working on how to set my mind to deal with ALL that goes on here. I have to be here for now, so I have to cope.
One thing, I have men from Libya trying to join an expat women's group. You tell me what you think that's about.
We have an expat group here and there are Libyans from Tripoli on it. Do they know what "expat" means?
Does the "i" word come to mind?
This list is too long, so don't ask me. I'm done with this conversation. I will keep how I feel to myself.
i need a new flat in the Dahra area

Now that's out of order, if he had DEMANDED it fair enough, maybe he just wanted to check the quality of the leather Their is a flat (very smart) for lease down my way (by the Radisson/British Consul), no idea of the cost though, you might struggle to get something decent in the centre for 1000 LYD.

"I spent 9 years working as security on the doors of pubs and clubs in Scotland" what in the world are you doing in Libya then? Ain't no pubs & Clubs in Libya! And Abusaleem is not a druggies place....you Foo*. Think before you type...trying to act all tough telling others ohh look I did that, and I was this.
And how long have you been here anyway?
Now you are coming across as a complete t1t, it was a part time job to supplement my income at the time. I was informed (wrongly by the sounds of it) by a local that the streets you mentioned were full of drug users, if it upset you that I inferred it was an area full of drugs then I apologise. But don't try and tell me that certain areas in Tripoli are anywhere near as dangerous as those in European cities, you are just making yourself sound ignorant with statements like that.
If you check my registration date, you will get an idea how long I have been here for, or is that to difficult to figure out for you ?. Â

Would be good to meet up mate, you can never have too many friends here. I go after work every day in summer time (May - September) I get there about 3.15 and leave about 5, in the winter I get there about 4.45 and leave about 6. It is only a 5 minute walk from my flat, so just let me know of the day and time and we will arrange a meet up.
May I ask as to why you go to The Radisson?
I have been a few times for meetings, there is only a coffee shop that I have been to and the restaurant out the back, both on the ground floor.
