Confusion

Party Animal

Hi guys, I'm Angelo!

Well, I was born in Italy (I'm 23 years old) even though my parents were born in Vietnam.
Both of them don't have a Vietnamese citizenship anymore, so I have any chance to get it?

Sorry for my bad english!

Besides coming here and marrying a Vietnamese Citizen, you have a slight chance.  Your parents actually must reclaim their Vietnamese Citizenship first, then sponsor you.

The law also says that children born overseas to at least one Vietnamese parent will be able to claim citizenship of the Southeast Asian country.

This source is from 2008.  Need further checking.

You might also want to wait until you're....30 to ask for it..as 23 is a ripe age for picking.  Then again, you might enjoy the Vietnamese Army (but go Navy).  Will give you a boost in your career as a public servant in the Vietnamese bureaucracy, but I doubt your parents would agree with those ambitions.

This would suggest that those who regain their Vietnamese nationality will enjoy full rights, such as being able to buy property, but may also be subject to obligations such as military service for males.

Yeah, but if possible, I would like to have a dual citizenship.

khanh44

if you have a dual citizenship and stir up trouble in Vietnam good luck with your Italian embassy trying to protect you.

Hi,

1. Firstly, you can't have dual citizenship if you want Vietnamese citizenship. However, there're 3 cases that you can have dual citizenship including Vietnam citizen:
- Special cases approved by VN Prime Minister.
- If you were Vietnam citizen, went aboard, changed to its citizen and now living aboard then you want to apply for VN citizen.
- You're adopted by Vietnamese parents.

2. If your parents are Vietnam citizens, you're certainly a Vietnam citizen without asking for permission. If not, you can submit your requirement to Vietnam Government. I'll show more if you need further help.

One of your parents has to still be a registered citizen of Viet Nam, that was what my brothers ex-gf found out when she applied for a passport for her son who was born in Australia. She was still a registered citizen of Viet Nam, so was able to get him a VN passport, that was in 2012 but laws here change very quickly.
